GUIDANCE PERSONNEL (ROLES AND FUNCTIONS)

The director has the overall responsibility for guiding all the personnel in any guidance and counseling office. Specifically, s/ he:

v  Review adjusts and improves the guidance and counseling program each year.
v  Meet with parents about their children’s concerns.
v  Meet with students.
v  Establish and maintains mutually beneficial relationships with the staff.
v  Attend national and regional conferences.
v  Attends administrative meeting.
v  Prepare reports.
v  Attends meetings with other guidance personnel.
v  Provides counseling to advisers of students.
v  Prepares yearly budget plan.
v  Anticipates expenses.
v  Approves all expenditures from guidance and counseling budget.

The qualifications of a guidance director is to have a strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, flexibility, ease and experience with computers and willingness to coordinate efforts with others.

GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

Counselor assists people with personal, family, educational, mental health and career decisions and problems. While helping students Plan College and career is part of their job, a guidance counselor’s overall function is to talk to students, provide options, listen to problems, help students develop coping skills and learn to become good problem- solvers and decision- makers on their own. Specifically, school cou8nselor play a major role in the social, emotional and academic development of their students.

Counseling in school includes a wide variety of activities and services. The following list twill describes the services of a school counseling program. These include.

v  Individual Counseling- School counselors provide individual sessions for students to help with educational and personal concerns.
v  Group Counseling- Students help each other by working in small groups with leadership from the counselor.
v  Group Guidance- Counselors meet with groups to help students learn information about themselves.
v  Student appraisal- Counselor help students, parents, and teacher by collecting information about the student abilities, behaviors, and achievements so discussions can be made about educational placement and instructions.
v  Referral- Counselor is referral agents who help students and their families receive assistance from other programs and services in the school system and from agencies outside school.
v  Consultation- Counselor consults with the teachers and parents to plan appropriate services for every student.
v  Coordination- Counselor coordinate services and activities for smooth administration.

It necessary to listen for three pieces of information students bring to counseling sessions:

v  Their problem concern,
v  Their feelings about the problem, and
v  Their expectations for what they want the counselor to do.

Most problems may be classified in one or more of five categories:

v  Conflict with others,
v  Conflict with self,
v  Lack of information about self,
v  Lack of information about environment, and
v  Lack of skill.

An important part of the counseling process for students involves training in communication, assertion and effective study habits. The counselor’s attitudes and skill are very important to the quality of the counseling relationship. The qualities and behaviors present in very effective counselor are as follows:

v  Intellectual competence- counseling requires a person to have adequate knowledge of many areas.
v  Energy- Counseling is emotionally demanding.
v  Flexibility- Effective counselors are not tied to a single method of work.
v  Support- The student experiences the fact that here is someone who respects him as he is.
v  Good will- The counselor’s motive and intention are positive and constructive rather than negative and destructive.
v  Self – awareness- All our feelings and thoughts influence the way we handle certain things in the counseling relationship.

In the counseling there are both advantages and disadvantages of the job.
The main advantage is that you get touch the life of a student.
Another advantage would be that you have an opportunity to work with a variety of professional who are concerned about the welfare of the student.
The main disadvantage of school counseling is that it is both emotionally and physical draining. Another disadvantage is that you work for many people.

PSYCHOMETRICIAN

      The term psychometrician is a misnomer because technically speaking a psychometrician is someone who develops the test.

v  Identifies and select test, in coordination with the Guidance Director that must be purchased and administered.
v  Setting schedule of testing services either individually or by group.
v  Administers, correct and interprets test result.
v  Provides counselor with result of test to be of aid for counseling, placements and makes and other relevant concerns.
v  Encodes and makes summaries of test results for future references.
v  Prepare testing materials and other necessary to carry out testing activities.
v  Keep test materials and tests result.

RESEARCHER

            A researcher design formulates and conducts research projects. S/he collect, manage and analyze information and organize data which are presented in oral or written form.

Results may be used to shape policy or to examine the effectiveness of existing policy. The functions of a researcher are as follows:

v  Defining and refining research objectives;
v  Designing questionnaires;
v  Using an appropriate and creative methodology to design and manage a research project.
v  Applying a variety of research techniques to gather relevant information, including document analysis, surveys, case studies and interviews;
v  Developing and testing theories;
v  Liaising with directing social research field interviewers to gather information;
v  Conducting literature searches using electronic database;
v  Carrying out or directing field work to gather information;
v  Preparing and reporting findings and disseminating results, both orally and in writing; and
v  Offering research- based briefing and advice, which may involve writing action plans.

Secretaries make appointments. They put files in order. They also write letters and answer the phone

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGISTS

Clinical psychologies aim to reduce psychological distress and enhance and promote psychological well- being. 
Clinical psychologists work with people of all ages who experience mental or physical health problems. These may include:

v  Anxiety and depression;
v  Serious and enduring mental illness;
v  Adjustment to physical illness;
v  Neurological disorder;
v  Addictive behaviors;
v  Eating disorders;
v  Behavior disorders;
v  Personal and family relationship problems;
v  Learning disabilities.

Typical work activities of clinical psychologists include:

v  Assessing a clients abilities or behavior using variety of methods, including psychometric tests, interviews and direct observation of behavior;
v  Working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside doctors, nurses, social workers, education professional, health visitors, school health nurses, occupational therapist and physiotherapists;
v  Devising and monitoring appropriate programs of treatment, including therapy, counseling, in collaboration with colleagues;
v  Offering therapy for difficulties relating to anxiety, depression, addictions, social and interpersonal problems, challenging behavior and, increasingly, a range of more difficult problems;
v  Rehabilitating long- stay patient into the community;
v  Developing and evaluating service provision;
v  Developing and supervising high- quality assessment and therapeutic work by colleagues in multidisciplinary teams;
v  Counseling and supporting career;
v  Carrying- out applied research, adding to the evidence base of practice in a variety of health care setting.




COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGIST

Assess and evaluate individuals’ problems through the use of case history, interview, and observation and provide individual or group counseling services to assist individuals in achieving more effective personal, social, educational, and vocational development and adjustment. The typical duties of counseling psychologist include:

v  Selection, administration and interpretation of psychological test to assess intelligence, aptitudes, abilities or interests.
v  Consultation with other professionals to discuss therapies, treatments, counseling resources, or techniques, and share occupational information.
v  Referral of clients to specialists or to other institutions for non- counseling treatment of problems. Conducting of researches to develop or improve diagnostic or therapeutic counseling techniques.
v  Provide consulting services to schools, social service agencies and businesses.
v  Guide client on how they could be helped by counseling.
v  Collect information about individuals or clients, using interviews case histories, observational techniques, and other assessment method.
v  Counsel individuals, groups or families to help them to understand problems, define goals, and develop realistic action plans.
v  Analyze data such as interview notes, test result, and reference manual in order to identify symptoms and to diagnose the nature of clients’ problems.
v  Develop therapeutic and treatment plans based on clients’ interests, abilities, and needs.
v  Evaluate the results of counseling method to determine the reliability and validity of treatments.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS

School Psychologist is an excellent field for those who want to work with youth and feel a drive to make positive difference in lives.
School Psychologists are expert in special education and have a large role in the eligibility process for special child.

            DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Developmental psychologist job are an excellent choice for those who want to contribute to the general knowledge of human development.
Developmental Psychologists explore the influence of the environment vs. genes, a comparison often referred to as “nature vs. nurture”.



 Developmental psychologist can choose from a variety of work environments. Here are a few of many options:

v  Conducting research at a university
v  Interacting with patients and medical professionals a hospital of other medical facility

v  Working with populations as varied as the elderly, homeless or infants to perform evaluation and tests.

PSYCAHITRIST

Psychiatrist is the primary caregivers in the area of mental health. They assess and treat mental illnesses through a combination of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, hospitalization and medication. Psychiatrist helps them find solutions through changes in their behavioral patterns, the exploration of their past experiences, or group and family therapy sessions.

SOCIAL WORKER

Social worker works with people who have been socially exclude or who are experiencing crisis. Their role is to provide support to enable service users to help themselves.




Over 50% of social workers work with young people and their families. They may also work with the fo0llowing groups:

v  Young offenders;
v  People with mental health problems;
v  School non- attenders;
v  Drug and alcohol abusers;
v  People with learning and physical disabilities;
v  The elderly.

Government legislation focusing on the integration of health and social work services means that social workers often work in multidisciplinary teams. Tasks typically involve:

v  Undertaking and writing up assessment,
v  Conducting interviews with service users and their families to assess and review the situation,
v  Offering information and counseling support to service users to lead the fullest lives possible.
v  Organizing and managing packages and support to enable service user to lead the fullest lives possible,
v  Recommendation and sometimes making decision about the best course of action for a particular services user,
v  Liaising with and making referrals to other agencies,
v  Participating in multidisciplinary teams and meetings,
v  Maintaining accurate records and preparing reports for legal action,
v  Giving evidence in court.
v  Participating in training, supervision and team meetings.

  • To promote the services of the Guidance Center to students, faculty members, and employees of the institution.
  • To establish a “catharsis center.”
  • To provide opportunities for the students to enrich their social lives.





  1. a.     Counseling Services
The counseling service is designed to facilitate self understanding and development through dyadic or small group relationships. The aim of such relationships tends to be on personal development and decision making that is based on self-understanding and knowledge of the environment.
            The counseling is the “heart and soul” of the guidance program. It aims to assist students in gaining deeper self-understanding and awareness.

  1. b.    Testing/ Assessment Services

Tests will be useful as a guidance tool if combined with appropriate planning for individual development. Tests provide “information in meaningful terms through quantitative description.”

Orientation and Information Service consist of accumulation and dissemination of information about the different guidance activities, vocational opportunities, and educational information for better adjustment and personal growth.




  1. c.      Student Inventory
This is a continuous process of accumulating, recording, and utilizing information on each student for guidance and counseling purposes and for obtaining a complete picture of the individual.

  1. d.    Training/ Seminar/ Forum
These are programs designed to help students discover their innate ability and talents as well as develop their emotional intelligence. Symposium and Forum are organized as information program to tackle important life issues.

  1. e.      Placements and Career Services
Placement involves pupil assessment, informational services, and counseling assistance appropriate to the pupil’s choices of school subjects, co-curricular activities, and employment. Follow-up is concerned with the development of a systematic plan for maintaining contact with former students.
They are coached on how to write an application letter, resume and the development of self-confidence in facing interview by the prospective employer.

  1. f.      Research Services
Research capabilities are conducted in conjunction with relevant educational studies like students’ delinquency problems, teenage pregnancy, faculty-student relationship and others. It helps bridge the gap that concurrently exists between theories and practice in counseling.

  1. g.     Career and Life Planning
Career Development Program is a package of activities designed to develop skills in self-exploration, values clarification, career planning and decision-making, and life-goal setting.

  1. h.    Freshmen Enhancement Program
It is a package of activities for freshmen designed to facilitate adjustment into college life, enhance self-awareness and understanding and develop the basic skills in coping effectively with rigors of academic life.

  1. i.       Referral
Special cases, which require service beyond the scope of guidance and counseling program, are referred to other agencies.

  1. j.       Linkages
The Guidance and Counseling Program also carry out collaborative activities with school and community-based organizations.



  1. k.    Extension Services
They extend themselves by helping others through training, seminars/workshops, or conduct research as they are often invited in occasions needing their skills and knowledge.

  1. l.       Peer Facilitation
They are trained to help the staff in the delivery of the guidance services, as well as extension services. Practicum students are provided the opportunity for on-the-job experience in the guidance field.

"REACTION"

Nowadays, many problems continuous  growing in our society and it may lead to danger
to all people that surrounds on it  Among these problem are: teen Pregnancy, which continues to be a societal concern, substances, abuse these are drug including alcohol and tobacco that continue to be a serious problem for youth school violence that range from bullying to gunfire
child abuse,  terrorism,  dropouts etc. these problem can be cure with help of guidance counselors which plays a very important rule on these/issues. For instance , in teen pregnancy
counselors are often the liaison with community agencies that work to prevent student pregnancy and assist with students who are victims in teenage pregnancy. , ,
